This weekend I worked on the street team for the Coexist Foundation at H St. Festival with Pivot Point Communications. Not only did I learn tons on the PR side of before, during and after a major event, but the experience opened my eyes to the world of nonprofits. I never really thought about nonprofits when compiling lists of my top PR fields, but now that has changed.
I spent quite a bit of time temporary tattooing kids, teens and adults with some Coexist “swag.” I also tattooed myself once or twice.
I’m sure everyone can say that they feel empowered by giving back in some way, but the way I felt at the end of the day Saturday was beyond empowered. and almost unexplainable. Although I was exhausted from a 13 hour action-packed day, I felt like I could do it all over again.
So, let me tell you a little bit about my experience….
First of all, the Coexist Foundation is a nonprofit organization that works to create understanding across divides. The foundation is currently running a campaign called the Coexist Campaign, which is a campaign to increase understanding and reduce conflict in divided communities across the world.
The campaign created coffee, which comes from Uganda, and every bag purchased gives one child in Uganda a week of education… pretty cool, right? Oh, and the coffee tastes amazing too. A sommelier from Starbucks said it might be one of the best cups of coffee they’ve ever had!
Coexist is starting to have “pop-up shops” in the DMV area.
Coexist took things to the next level at H St. Festival. They cold brewed this coffee, added nitrogen and served it out of a keg, yes, a keg. It was awesome. The coffee came out frothy and thick like a pint of Guinness, and tasted great without any cream and sugar. The booth was constantly packed with people eager to try this new type of coffee.
They were also selling some awesome T-shirts, which are super comfortable by the way. I wore one that said “Coexist- caffeination without representation.”
Coexist “swag” sold on Saturday included T-shirts, onesies for babies, bumper stickers/magnets, guitar stickers and bracelets.
This was quite a unique and rewarding experience, and I hope to work with the Coexist team again in the future.
“Keep Calm, and Coexist.”
